So this is 30, thirty themes in 30 days. I cannot believe how fast it went by and that I made it to 30! It was tough some days, but I am glad we did it. It gave us all something to focus on and something to look forward to each day. As a bonus, I never forgot what day of the week it was :). The first few days of the shutdown, I was feeling pretty lost so this gave me some silly purpose and allowed me to be creative. I hope I have created some fun memories for the girls.
For our last day we did Science Fair Saturday. Both girls love science and have been blessed with great STEAM teachers and programs. I have tried to incorporate some experiments into our other themes and both girls have had science school assignments, but they are always hungry for more science. We own some great books and experiment kits ready for use. I highly recommend STEAM Kids In The Kitchen, I don't like to cook but these are fun simple experiments in the kitchen with stuff you likely already have, perfect for homeschooling. I thought it would be perfect to dedicate a entire day to the wonders of science!
The girls came down in the morning to find Mad Scientist check in with their lab badges. Their doctor coats doubled as lab coats for lab duty today.

We set up our science lab. I found some easy printables. I usually only use free or under 5 dollars printables but since today was our last day I splurged. I love this printable set

Science Snacks for the day included Scientist Sandwiches, H2O, Cheesium Particles, Atomic Apples, and Worms In Dirt for dessert( pudding, crushed Oreos, and gummie worms.) I completely forgot to build molecules using fruit! You use tooth picks with grapes or blueberries or you can use candy. A simple but cool science snack. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/126030489551357754/ There are also so many fun snacks using petri dishes.
We conducted several experiments(or experiences as Elise calls them)
1) Made worms using our science kit. Avery got this for her birthday and it has been a gem during this shut down. This was our 3rd chemistry experiment and they love the quick chemical reactions. We had previously made bouncing balls and disappearing ink.
2) Grew crystal trees from Lakeshore. Grandma had sent us this fun idea. Best part of this experiment is that it happens fast, you will see results in an hour.
3) Created slime. For the record I detest slime. Ever since Avery got it all over her dress, hair, and carpet Easter 2017, I have not let it in the house. But knowing it was our last day, and how much the girls wanted to do it, I cracked. My sister in law gave us a slime making kit that uses Elmers Glue and contact lens solution. I was sure it was going to be an epic disaster but it made great slime! It wasn't sticky and playing with it was actually therapeutic.
4) Started crystal necklaces. This experiment started on Science Saturday, but looks like it will roll into the week. I am one of those people that never reads the directions in advance. I skim them, jump in and then really read them when things go off the rails. I would have made a horrible scientist! Thankfully Daddy is a process science guy and steps in regularly to rescue us. Well this experiment needs almost two full days with steps along the way so I will have to give an update later.
Finally, we watched some additional episodes from our favorite science guy. We love these science videos https://www.generationgenius.com/?fbclid=IwAR0XofWO4s0z3yuao4KJAhVsdXpmU8GNej0tmeH04msX70Jsib-Fpt0f6PY

Fruti Molecule idea for next time!
