Sports Saturday- 2020 Jacobs Olympics

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

Well after a long break, I am back with some themes. The kids have been missing them and things are shutting down again so it looks like we will be needing more things to do.

We had all been looking forward to the Toyko Summer Olympics. We were so bummed they were postponed. So we hosted our very own this weekend with moderate success.

Over the weekend, opening ceremonies kick started the 2020 Jacobs Olympics. The Olympic torch was officially lit early Sunday morning. No one was surprised to see the IOC had selected the Jacobs strongest athletes, sisters Avery and Elise Jacobs as the final torch bearers. There was some dramatic confusion as the sisters approached the stadium and veered off course but they were finally able to locate the torch and light it with great enthusiasm. The 2020 Olympic Games were open!

After opening ceremonies, we headed over to the gymnastics center for our first event. We began with the floor exercise competition. Sadly, Simone Biles was unable to participate, but we still had a fantastic line up of fierce competitors. The audience was amazed by the endless series of cartwheels and walk overs. The dazzling Olympic performances and commentary can be found in the video clips below. Avery started off with a strong performance to the Descendants “Rotten to the Core” and pulled off a solid 9.75. Elise was up next rocking an ice skating outfit and a hairdo that really sent the gymnastics world a buzz. Her fans often describe her original look as her “Bret Michaels Rock of Love” look. After much controversy, Avery Jacobs was awarded the gold and Elise had to settle for the silver. The teammates hugged to congratulate each other but several experts in the stands questioned if the congratulations were genuine as Elise Jacobs’ expression looked reminiscent of McKayla Maroney’s silver medal win at the 2012 London games.

Later that day, we headed over to the track and field competition. The first event was the legendary 100 meter dash and it was as exciting as ever! In a bolt to the finish line, Elise Jacobs easily beat out her sister taking home her first gold medal in the 100m. Elise’s record breaking sprint would have made local hero Florence Griffith Joyner proud. Avery not to be denied a track victory made a quick come back to take home gold in the 500 meter. Next was the marathon but unfortunately, the judges had to call the race. The marathon was forfeited after what can only be described as a pro-soccer player like fake injury by Elise. She grabbed her ankle, fell to the ground and accused a fellow runner of running her off course.

Next we headed over the aquatic center for diving. The crowd anxiously awaited the first ever co-ed diving competition. Steve Jacobs, the oldest athlete to compete in these games made his debut with a crowd pleasing dive that earned him a 10. Elise Jacobs stunned everyone with her 9.75 signature tight tuck cannonball. Avery followed up with a strong 9.50 swimmers dive. The scores were close for the final round as Steve Jacobs remained in the lead with straight 10s. Unfortunately, he put it all on the line risking it all for a big finish that ended in a belly flop. Elise was able to pull out a gold metal victory after scoring a 10 in the final round.

After a moving medal ceremony, we retired to the Olympic village to rest up for more competition later this week.

Unfortunately, Bob Costas was unavailable for sports commentary, so Mama Jacobs will be handling all of the updates. Stay tuned for the future sports line up later in these Olympic Games(cue the Olympic Sports theme)
