I see your true colors shinning through
And I see your true colors
and that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
Your true colors
Are beautiful
Like a rainbow
Today was a simple theme but an important one. I wanted to have a theme that celebrated being true to yourself, something I have always struggled with personally. I am working at being a good example for the girls. I am always a work in progress! I hope I can create an environment where they feel they can always show their true colors.
I told them they could dress in anything they loved. We always say "if it gives you joy in your heart and is't hurting anyone than you do you!" Elise's first outfit choice of the day was her disco shirt and Avery chose to dress like a panda. Her class Zoom assignment was to present her favorite animal and she went all in! She later changed into her favorite tie dye shirt and bright rainbow skirt.
They have been asking for a crazy hair day for a while and I figured this would be a perfect day for it. They really wanted "cupcake hair" which is just two buns with a cupcake wrappers around the outside. They added cherries (rolled up pipe cleaner) to the center for the finishing touch.

We read through multiple books that fit our theme. Amy Giggles about a girl that learns to love her loud laugh (a story that I can relate to on many levels.) It Is Okay to Be Different, The Feelings Book, and one of our all time favorites Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. Some of our favorite Rebel Girls include Mary Edwards Walker and Jacquotte Delahaye. Two rebels who really showed their true colors.
We rounded out our day with a project Avery has had her eye on for a few days. I thought it was perfect for our theme today! Her Girl Scout Leader posted a photo of melted crayons on canvas. You just tape or glue the crayons to a canvas then heat them with a hairdryer. They melt almost instantly into a cool design. It is much easier and quicker than I was expecting. I just recommend putting down a drop cloth because there is some splatter and it dries incredibly fast. After our canvas dried, I peeled off the tape and they wrote their names on the top. It was one of their favorite craft projects. It is a great way to turn beat up old crayons into something beautiful.
We also worked on some posters for our upcoming drive thru birthday parties this week. It is strange how the first drive by event we attended seemed crazy and now this just a part of our new normal. We also picked up their custom masks today and they were super thrilled to try them on. There have been so many changes and adjustments to the colors of our landscape but we are adjusting. Like the crayons, we won't be the same when this over. But hopefully we will come out brighter and better.
