Wild Western Wednesday

This was not a theme I would have anticipated being a big success. Western Wednesday was another suggestion from the girls and I thought putting it together was going to be a stretch. We live in Southern California and are rarely around horses or anything really "western" for that matter. I am a So Cal girl and I always read Rodeo as Ro-day-o as in Rodeo Drive. The girls had been to Rawhide Camp with Adventure Guides and did have western outfits, so I committed to trying it. This theme must be a really popular in other parts of the country because there are a TON of ideas out there. So Yippee ki-yay we are off to our first rodeo!

Giddy Up Cowgirls!
We started school by picking out our Cowgirl names- Amy Oakley here. Elise was Wild Abigail and Avery was Wild Flower. We then created our wanted posters with fabulous facts about ourselves. It was fun to read what they wrote.
Write Em' Cowboy!
There are a ton of fun printables on line for this theme and I stumbled across a great site www.teacherspayteachers.com. They offer some really great handouts specific to grade level and have everything from class parties to math worksheets. Some are free and some were a few dollars. We enjoyed our Write' Em Cowboy and Reading Rodeo sessions at school as well as our Oregon Trail word search. We discussed the Oregon Trail and I found a coloring book that featured stories on animals from the Western Plains. A loose tie in but I had them pick one, color it, and present two facts about their animal. Providing some kind of educational tie in makes me feel like I have accomplished something.
Cowgirl Brain Breakers!
We discovered brain breakers on the same website. According to my girls, this is a pretty common thing for most classrooms but it was new to me. There are a bunch of quick activities like hop on one foot for thirty counts, jump backwards across the room, or do 25 jumping jacks. Whenever I feel like they are getting a little stir crazy, I let them pick from the brain breakers bag and we all do one activity together. Even though they are western themed, we are going to keep this one around everyday.

Wild Western Supper!
Decorating was a snap with a little help from some old pink bandanas and some 4th of July stars we had in the garage. Snacks included: Happy Trails to You (Trail Mix), Piglet Punch (With Pig Cups), Haystacks(rice crispy treats, Lil' Doggies (Hot dogs) and country apples. I have been trying to push these darn apples in every theme. They loved them a week ago and ate the whole bag in two days. So I ordered two huge bags and now I can't get anyone to eat them.
Cowgirl Crafts!
We made cowgirl hats using my favorite craft ingredient- paper plates. Simple to paint, wait for it dry, then cut and decorate. SO many other great craft for this theme on Pinterest. I wanted to create a horse puppet from paper bags but I didn't have any large paper bags that didn't say Amazon all over them.
Reading Rodeo!
We didn't have many Western books in our "library" but I found a good excuse to read some of Doreen Coronin's Duck and Farmer Brown books. I love those books!
We ended the night by watching an episode of Spirit Riding free who as it turns out was the girls inspiration for requesting a western theme.
Happy Trails!
