The girls have been looking forward to this theme for a while, I couldn't end our theme days before we found a way to set up Hogwarts! Avery's birthday falls close to Halloween and she chose to have a "good witch" party this last October. We had plenty of left over birthday decorations and I had more than a few Halloween decorations to use for this theme. My girls love going outside to create potions with flowers, seeds, grass, and any thing else they can find. I remember as a kid having this fun fascination of witches, potions, and spells. Unlike grown ups, kids don't associate anything scary about it, they just find it fun.

Today was kind of a mash up theme of Harry Potter with a sprinkle of Descendants, and some general witch craft fun. Both girls loved a Harry Potter art camp they attended last summer. It is where they made the candles seen hanging from our chandelier and their wands. Avery just started reading her first Harry Potter book. I have been hesitant to read it to Elise as she tends to spook and get nightmares easily. But she LOVED today so much, I think I am going to give it a try.

As you can see Elise chose to be a magical cat over wearing her witch costume. I love how they both fully get into character with each theme.

I brought out my witch hat and the spirit of Professor Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith). It gave me an excuse to speak with a British accent (badly). I started school in our classroom (the kitchen nook) and then told them they had been accepted to Hogwarts (House of Gryffindor of course) and asked them to join me in the Grand Hall. They were thrilled to have school in a different room of the house today.

I thoroughly enjoyed setting up our Grand Hall. Our black backdrop was transformed into a table cloth. I found some gold chargers, some Halloween decorations, and I printed out some fun labels for our potions/school supplies. I also found a Harry Potter themed lesson on Teacherspayteachers.com. Links below. Oh and yes that is a bottle of Jack with a potion label on it, no I didn't drink it, and yes I was tempted mid way through Avery's science project. Of all and spooky potions, and Hogwarts print outs, they were most excited about their "quills" which were just pencils I had taped a feather onto.

I pulled out all of my Halloween favorites for snack. I am a lousy cook but I have become crafty at disguising boring snacks. Snacks included: ghosts (bananas with chocolate chips), witch fingers (celery, peanut butter, and an almond slice) pumpkins (oranges and celery), broom sticks (pretzel sticks in a peanut butter cup) witch hats (Hersey Kiss on an Oreo), poison apples, and Butter Beer (apple cider.) All were devoured by my little wizards.

Today was a busy day with school, work, and ballet classes. We did find some time to make potions in the yard and did a favorite experiment that seemed fitting to our theme, the phases of the moon. The print out is free and who doesn't love getting to learn about the moon using Oreos? Handout link below. And OMG we finally finished the crystal experiment that we started on Saturday. It came out pretty good in the end, 4 of 6 made it and they were able to wear their necklaces today. We enjoyed looking at the moon later that evening to see if we could spot the phase.

Today was one of their favorites and mine. I love giving them something to look forward to and enjoy. Harry Potter came out when I was well way past adulthood and although I didn't read all of the books, I have seen most of the movies. I find the concept absolutely glorious, it touches the inner child in us all. What child wouldn't love to discover they have magical powers and got to a school for wizards! Like the story, today was one of those days that was truly magical!
